The Doncaster Jazz Orchestra (DJO)
Directed by John Ellis

The DJO is the alumni ensemble. Most of the members are players who have graduated from the ranks of DYJA, but who have chosen to remain in the Yorkshire region. Some are part-time professionals, some are teachers, some are students at universities in the area and others are in totally unrelated forms of employment. What they do share is a common interest in big band jazz and a desire to perform music at the highest possible level.
Following a pre-agreed programme of Sunday rehearsals, this ensemble re-assembles for special concerts and events. The extraordinary success of the Doncaster Jazz Orchestra has to be attributed to the dedication of the individuals and the sacrifices made in order to attend rehearsals, concerts, recordings sessions and concert tours.
Several of the current DJO members are specialist 'in house' instrumental teachers at the Centre, who tutor and prepare the younger members for examinations and ensemble involvement. Others are enjoying individual success with their own music projects locally.
Past members who have chosen a career in music are in many cases the inspiration to so many. They are dotted around the world, but the greater majority are honing their skills as professionals in London's West End, in professional bands, in recording studios and in TV work.
