Johnny Thirkell Biog
Johnny Thirkell is one of Britain’s top trumpet and flugelhorn players. Since the 1980’s, he has played on literally hundreds of pop, rock, and jazz recordings and has also appeared on 22 No.1 records. He was on at least one album in the UK charts continuously, without a break, for over 13 years and in 2009 he had two consecutive UK No.1 singles with Pixie Lott. John was the first person to be inducted into the Musician’s Union “Hall of Fame”.
Credits include Level 42, George Michael, Jamiroquai, Grace Jones, UB40, Cher, Tina Turner, Pet Shop Boys, Swing Out Sister and Lisa Stansfield and a stint in the Buddy Rich Band. In 2015 he scored his 22nd UK No.1 playing on Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk.”John grew up in the North East, left school at 16 and worked in a coal mine and played in brass bands before heading off to Uni then to Leeds College of Music where he and Snake met on the ‘jazz and light music’ course. They have played together as often as possible ever since; On the road with Lisa Stansfield, Swing out Sister, Banzilla, backing the stars at The Royal Albert Hall Princes Trust events and jazz jams.
Johnny is an inspirational teacher, now delivering workshops and master-classes in colleges across the UK.
