DYJO return to Marsden Jazz Festival to play a special guest feature with US trombonist Michael Dease. Directed by Dennis Rollins, listeners will be in for a treat with the combined big band and trombone talent of the award winning Doncaster Youth Jazz Orchestra and Grammy award winner Michael Dease.
Doncaster Youth Jazz Association provides specialised individual tuition, masterclasses, workshops and performance opportunities for young people throughout Yorkshire. Thousands of young people have benefitted from its educational ideals and the experience of performing to a high level. Many have become highly respected professional musicians in the UK and other countries.
This masterclass is open to all ‘bone players of all standards. Dennis will have tips on improvisation, how and what to practice, how to develop individual sound, play in all the different styles and much more. Oh! And there’ll be lots of playing as well!
Dennis Rollins is an acclaimed musician, composer and educator. He is well-known on the British and international jazz scene, and celebrated for his versatility and unique approach to the trombone in a repertoire of high-energy, groove-based, funky dance music with jazz attitude and stylings. Dennis has received critical acclaim and many awards, including Trombonist of the Year at the inaugural Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Awards; BBC Jazz Award for Best Band, Marsden’s Pedigree British Jazz Award for Best Trombonist and the prestigious cross-Parliamentary Jazz Educator Award. Dennis is an Ambassador to the National Foundation for Youth Music’s Endangered Species programme, set up to boost youth interest in instruments such as the trombone, French horn, double bass, bassoon, tuba and oboe. He is also on the Board of the Advisors of the British Trombone Society. Dennis has performed with some of the world’s top jazz and pop acts, including Quincy Jones, the Jazz Warriors, Courtney Pine, Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies, Blur and Maceo Parker. He is also a formidable band leader of jazz/funk outfit Badbone & Co and the sensational Velocity Trio. Their latest album ‘Symbiosis’ is enjoying rave reviews.

Over the years, this big band knees-up has definitely become the most eagerly anticipated event of the Doncaster Youth Jazz Association calendar. All current DYJA members will perform in their respective ensembles. The matinee performance (2.00-4.30pm) will feature the talented younger members of the Stageband and the Swing Orchestra. The evening performance (7.30 – 11pm) will highlight the talent of the Doncaster Youth Jazz Orchestra (directed by Dennis Rollins Associate Music Director) followed by the senior Doncaster Jazz orchestra (DJO Alumni) with special guests directed by John Ellis MBE.

Doncaster Youth Jazz Association are excited to be delivering some of it’s 2017 music educational programme in partnership with the Ronnie Scott’s Charitable Foundation. From January 2017 we have a host of new projects planned that are designed to get the Yorkshire region’s young jazz musicians engaged in music. Look out for “Trombones on the Slide” a pilot programme engaging with local primary schools with the hope of producing a new round of trombonists. (more to follow in the next few weeks). Or perhaps, as a budding young musician one of our Masterclasses headed up by the likes of Quentin Collins (trumpet), Lee Gibson (vocals) and Dennis Rollins (trombone), takes your fancy.
